In this article, we discuss some problems with a Westinghouse refrigerator when the ice maker stops working.

Issue With Water Filter

A clogged water filter can affect the flow of water and prevent ice from being made at a desirable rate.

It is recommended to have a new water filter installed every six months in order to maintain the proper amount of flow out of the dispenser and ensure that one is getting the water that has gone through numerous stages of filtration and purification.

Problem With Icemaker Switch

The ice maker might be defective, or perhaps the icemaker off switch just happens to need a cleaning. Make sure the on switch is in an on position, and then check to make sure that there has not been any damage to this part of the unit.

If both switches are working properly, but you’re still experiencing problems with ice maker functions, you’ll want to test the switch with a multimeter to see if it has power going through it. If there’s no continuity, you’ll need to replace the switch itself.

Mold Thermostat For Icemakers

An ice maker mold thermostat monitors the temperature of an ice mold. Once the ice mold reaches the proper temperature, the thermostat ejects any cubes of ice that are ready to be collected and refills the tray with more water.

If a thermostat is defective, it will cease to function and no longer produce any new cubed pieces of ice.

To troubleshoot a defective unit, one may use a multimeter to test it for continuity and if this appears faulty, they can replace it accordingly.

Fill Tubes For Water

Look at the ice mold in the ice maker. If it’s missing or minute, the next stop is the fill system for the water – where you will find the fill cup and tube connected behind it at the back of the icemaker.

If these two parts are iced over, check for a blockage in the tube that may be preventing water from flowing into the fill cup as it should. Is the inlet valve clear of blockage? Is water pressure normal?

If no to either question, then the problem could be solved by unplugging the fridge, removing, examining, and carefully running hot tap water through the outlet line till any blockage passes allow time for the line to pass through the warm cycle as well and return back to the fridge.

Error In Door Switch

The door switch turns off the ice and water dispenser when the refrigerator door is open. If the door switch fails, the dispenser will not turn on.

To determine if the door switch is defective, use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If there’s no continuity when activated then you’ll want to replace it.

Assembly Of The Ice Maker

Often, the one part of a machine that goes awry is the ice maker assembly. It can be any hard drive or motherboard in a computer and gear or pin in a watch, it’s so common that often the replacement must be purchased as an entire unit or at least two or three major components.

Before purchasing another whole set of parts, check the freezer temperature on your machine to make sure it’s at least 15 degrees. Make sure there’s water flowing into your machine through your water input valve.

If there is water flowing into your device and you’ve double-checked the freezer temperature, you may need to purchase another ice maker assembly entirely.

Inlet Valve For Water

Although the water inlet valve is an electrically-controlled valve that opens to supply water to the dispenser and ice maker, if it’s defective or if there is not enough pressure, it won’t allow water to flow through.

As a result, the ice maker won’t make ice. The valve itself requires at least 20 psi of pressure in order to function properly.

If the pressure isn’t strong enough as well as the fact that you check for power on the electrical end of things doesn’t show anything then check again! You may need to change out this part.
