Stihl Chainsaw Troubleshooting. Chainsaw Stihl is easy to operate, inexpensive in price, and reliable with long service life. The different brands attract many people who have a variety of reasons for preferring one over the other but one thing’s for sure.
At some point, the average chainsaw will break down and that’s when you know it’s a good idea to have a manual close by at all times.
And everyone knows that brand Stihl which just proves how highly regarded and appreciated this type of tool is.
Its popularity is reason enough to keep our trusty manual handy at all times during these instances where we find ourselves waiting on parts or in need of an extra hand so users can repair their own saws like experts on their own time.
Stihl Chainsaw Troubleshooting
Stihl chain saw problems are discussed here in order to troubleshoot them.
Stihl Chainsaw Runs Rough
The air filter may not be working properly. If the air filter isn’t taking on a sufficient amount of air for the engine to function properly, it will run too rich and then eventually stall or sputter.
Inspect your air filter to see if it has been clogged letting in even more unfiltered air while at the same time restricting airflow. Make sure you stay on top of replacing your filters so they don’t become this way.
The spark arrestor should also catch any potentially dangerous sparks flying from the engine if this is an issue.
This one can also get clogged over time making it less effective (over time we’ve seen these having some grit build up inside causing issues) either way keep tabs on these small but important pieces to troubleshooting and performing preventative maintenance overall.
Stihl Chainsaw Will Not Start
The ignition coil sends voltage to the spark plug while the engine is running. It is important that this piece of equipment is working perfectly, otherwise, the engine may not light and therefore fail to run. Before you replace an ignition coil, make sure the spark plug associated with it is in perfect working order.
If you’ve determined that the spark plug meets the appropriate standards necessary to run efficiently, then look at testing the ignition coil much in the same way you tested the spark plug ie, by using a test tool designed specifically for testing ignition coils or electrical components related to them.
If you find that your ignition coil has failed in its duties, it’s time to remove it from your chainsaw and integrate a replacement piece of equipment into its place all at once.
The spark plug might be the one responsible for starting your engine. So the best thing to do is try and get to the root of what may be wrong with your spark plug by removing it!
Once you’ve removed your spark plug, inspect either the porcelain insulator or both electrodes. If they’re damaged, this means that there is a poor connection in your circuit, which could prevent your car from starting up properly.
Furthermore, if your spark plug isn’t replaced often or if you have been driving around with the same one for a few seasons, now would be a good time to swap it out otherwise, you risk causing some damage to your chainsaw.
Stihl Chainsaw Isn’t Cutting
The chain may have worn down or the bar could be bent, in which case you will need to replace the chain. The oil reservoir needs to be filled with a special type of oil that is kept separate on chainsaws.
This can help keep the parts lubricated and allow them to last longer and run more efficiently, so it’s important you refill this tank as necessary.
Clutch pads are important too because they provide pressure on your bar during use so that it can effectively chop through the wood instead of breaking. If these become worn out, you may need to attach replacement clutch pads or even mend or replace the clutch itself.
Stihl Chainsaw Stalls After Starting
A clogged fuel filter is often caused by leaving old fuel in the chainsaw. Over time, some ingredients in the fuel may evaporate and leave behind a thicker, stickier substance.
This can clog up the fuel filter and cause the engine to stall, so if you suspect that you left any fuel in there then drain all of it from the chainsaw’s tank.
The spark arrestor is a tiny device that prevents the engine from emitting sparks. Over time, the device can become clogged with soot.
If the engine has a clogged spark arrestor it will be harder to operate smoothly and some debris may clear out the dirt in it, making it easier for it to work better.
To clean out a clogged spark trap: remove it and clear it out with a wire brush. You can also replace this part if you think you might want to do so in the future
Stihl Chainsaw Chain Won’t Turn
The clutch band drum brake stops the chain from rotating. If the clutch band is worn out, the motor will run but the coil won’t turn because the metal pieces of the band are too thin.
The metal pieces in the drum brake wear down over time, which means they will become thinner and thinner until they break.
Replace your clutch assembly as soon as you notice it isn’t engaging properly. If there’s a miss on one side or if one of your coils won’t turn, there may be something wrong with your coil.
