The Scotsman ice machines are typically built well and develop problems less frequently than other brands.
You still need to be mindful of potential watery buildup on particular pieces of equipment or general wear and tear that could cause concern.
This is why we’ve put together a few tips and tricks so you know how to troubleshoot if your ice machine ever needs some extra attention.
Defective Water Inlet Valve
For the water inlet valve to shut off correctly and prevent leaks into the icemaker below, it needs a minimum of 20 psi.
Water may leak down into the ice maker if pressure is too low – resulting in an overflow if the valve does not close properly once the power is removed.
Check if your house water pressure is at least 20 psi by connecting a garden hose to an outside faucet and turning your coldest faucet all the way up.
If you have sufficient water pressure, then there’s likely something wrong with your inlet valve.
It may not be propping or shutting off correctly or it might simply be stuck open causing leaks into the machine below. Replace your inlet valve if you suspect this.
Faulty Ice Maker Assembly
The ice maker assembly may contain a defective component. Ice makers comprise many parts; however.
If you are working with a craftsman and they advise that you purchase the entire unit, know that the replacement unit is likely to include parts that will last much longer than others.
A faulty Thermistor
If the ice bin in your freezer is overflowing, a faulty thermistor may be the culprit. One telltale sign of such a problem is if water or ice spills from your freezer door when you open it.
A technician will need to test the thermistor with a multimeter to see if it’s functioning properly. If the thermistor reading turns out negative, you’ll have to replace it.
If the water pressure is too low
If your ice maker is overflowing and the water line is leaking water into it, the cause could be that the valve controlling the amount of water pressure does not close all of the ways when turned off.
After shutting off the water, there may be insufficient water pressure for a period of time.
Check to make sure there is a closed, tight connection between this valve and your water inlet pipe going into the unit. If not, tighten them with a wrench or pliers (pipes may need to be removed).
When the valve is properly connected, turn on your power and check to see if your ice maker will stop overflowing.
Make sure you have enough water line pressure by using a gauge or weight at least 10psi higher than what’s needed to work properly.
Adjust the water flow on an ice maker
Your ice maker can be adjusted by turning the small adjustment screw on the upper, middle right-hand side a half-turn with a Phillips or flathead screwdriver, depending on the type of screw on the machine.
The water level decreases when the screw is turned clockwise, while the water level increases when it is turned counterclockwise.
