Kitchenaid Dishwasher Not Cleaning. If you see a sign of trouble in the dishwasher, you need to figure out what it is. If the problem is the racks aren’t cleaning properly, your best bet is to alter them to keep things flowing.
While a part problem may require a repair, with our KitchenAid Dishwasher troubleshooting tips, there’s little that can go wrong that can’t be fixed with some running water and cleansing product.
If your dishwasher isn’t cleaning as well as it should, there could be something blocking its inevitable success.
But once we put those issues aside and focus on optimal washing guidelines and using the right cleaner for each different load – any issue will come clean.
Kitchenaid Dishwasher Not Cleaning
Over the last few weeks, I have noticed that my dishwasher isn’t cleaning dishes very well.
If there’s no water inside it to rinse off the soap and grime that has accumulated on the plates during a drying cycle, then I know something is wrong with its water inlet valve.
There are two main types of KitchenAid dishwashers – one using a template to stabilize the inlet
Water With A Low Temperature
Most dishwasher cycles need water that’s 120 degrees to function properly. You can turn on your garbage disposal for about 10 seconds beforehand to preheat the water in the pipe (don’t worry, this won’t break your garbage disposal since it doesn’t use ducts-just make sure you cover up all drains with a paper towel or something to absorb any grease).
Next, you’ll want to make sure that the main hot water heater in your basement is set at 120 degrees. Finally, run some extra hot tap water through an open faucet in your kitchen sink before starting the dishwasher.
Do this for 30-60 seconds to ensure that hot water gets into the machine immediately during its first cycle.
Inlet Valve Failure
The inlet valve allows water to flow into the dishwasher. According to a lot of consumer accounts, if your dishwasher resides where it has a lot of people pass by on a daily basis, you’re bound to hear a hammering sound come from inside as it runs.
Sometimes homeowners can mistake it for regular sound from outdoors, although, from my own personal experience, I would know it right away as an error code signifying that the Inlet Valve has sprung a leak and needs replacing.
Filter That’s filthy
There are two different types of dishwasher filters: self-cleaning and removable. Older models have a self-cleaning filter that works by breaking down the food into pieces small enough to wash away with the next cycle, while newer models typically have a removable filter.
The latter sits at the bottom of the unit and is covered by a twist-off cap. To clean it, remove it from your dishwasher using the manual’s instructions and rinse it off thoroughly under hot running water.
If you find that there’s built-up gunk on your filter, soak it in hot, soapy water for several minutes as this will loosen debris and make it easier to gently scrub with a soft brush before rinsing one more time.
Pump Belt Issue
The water pump belt may need to be replaced. However, only some dishwashers have a water pump belt, so you’ll need to search for your model number and check if it requires this part.
To access the water pump belt, remove the lower panel. The water pump belt is located on the bottom of the motor. If the water pump belt is broken or worn, replace it.
Upper Wash Arm Spinner Problem
In the upper rack, the upper wash arm circulates water to the dishes. It may be blocked, which isn’t ideal because dishes on the upper rack will not be properly cleaned if the water cannot flow through it properly.
Left unchecked, food particles eventually become trapped in such tiny holes and cause a buildup that can damage dishes. Therefore, to unblock it, you should take out this wash arm and dispose of any debris so that the water does not encounter any obstructions.
This is due to the fact that if it becomes highly obstructed, it may be necessary to replace the part, and this will most likely fix the problem once and for all, so we recommend checking this area first before taking any replacement measures.
Defective Wash Impeller
The wash impeller is a small, plastic rotating drum that’s used to push water up through the arms and down into the drain. If this part is damaged or missing some of its fins, the motor might not generate enough pressure for this to work properly.
With most models, you can replace or repair your impeller without replacing the entire pump and motor assembly as long as they are available individually. Search for your model number to see if yours is replaceable.
Some washing machines have a different design and will need to have a brand new pump and motor assembly installed if your current one becomes damaged.
Wash Arm Assembly, Upper
An upper wash arm circulates water to enable the dishes in the upper rack to be cleaned. If the water can’t flow through this wash arm, your dishes won’t be cleaned well and, therefore, may come out dirty and full of food particles.
When this happens, any food particles that end up stuck in those tiny holes will become a collection point for more dirt and debris which only ends up making matters much worse over time.
Therefore we encourage you to remove your wash arm to check for any kind of blockage. Sometimes you might find only a small amount of dirt, so it might be easier than you think to clear things out.
But if not, it might be time to consider replacing the dishwashing brush itself, so you don’t have to worry about these sorts of problems occurring again in the future when trying to complete other tasks.
Circulation Pump Cause
The circulation pump utilizes a motor to force the water through the tub. Dishes won’t be well washed if the dishwasher doesn’t work properly.
If your dishwasher is not cleaning dishes well or there is no sound coming from the motor, then it is likely the circulation pump is malfunctioning. If your circulation pump is malfunctioning, the first thing you should do is troubleshoot the power.
First, switch on your dishwasher to see if it comes on. Then look for obvious damage or debris outside your dishwashers, such as a clogged hose or a kink where the hose meets the appliance.
If no problems are found, you should be able to fix things fairly easily by replacing your circulation pump since most people can easily do this themselves.
