You can use it for everything from making décor out of recycled wine bottles to overhauling a wooden chest from scratch, adding color and style in the blink of an eye.
But there’s a downside to spray paint. It can be notoriously difficult to remove if you accidentally cover the wrong surface.
How To Remove Spray Paint From Wood
Pour a generous amount of acetone solvent onto the rag. Spray directly on the wood. Let the solvent sit on the wood for several minutes, adding additional acetone as needed.

Using Soap and Water
If your paint sprayer ends up smearing onto a surface you didn’t intend to, there is a way to remove it. The soap-water solution will wash away latex paint and water-based spray paint from your wood surface.
Make a soapy water mixture by adding warm water with dish wash liquid detergent while stirring with the hand lather up rag in soapy water solution and wring out excess water well.
Wipe fresh paint off of the wood using the back of the poll or side of the scraper. Rinse rag if it clogs with paint. The last thing you want is to transfer paint from your cloth to the wood, making more of a mess than before. Continue wiping away the paint until you are satisfied with the outcome.
Use Rubbing Alcohol
This solution will remove spray paint from wood with a latex base. Saturate a rag in rubbing alcohol prior to applying it to the spray-painted surface.
Apply a generous amount of alcohol and allow it to remain on the surface for a few minutes so that the paint softens.
Once it has sufficiently loosened and softened, use the brush to scrub off each layer until all signs of paint have been removed after which you can wipe down the surface clean with a damp rag.
Use Acetone
Use acetone as a solvent to get rid of dried spray paint from wood. If the paint has an oil-based base, it will help break down the painting and make it easier for you to scrape off.
Wear your gloves and apply a generous amount of acetone to the area where the paint is stuck on. Not too close though-you don’t want any other part of the wood near that or acetone can do damage.
Allow it to settle for a few minutes then scrape off with a putty knife or plastic scraper using even pressure. Soak a rag in acetone or nail polish remover, and use the soaked rag to rub away the spray paint from a piece of furniture.
Acetone can remove sticky materials such as spray paint, so you may probably need to put some elbow grease into it if you plan on doing this in your own home. Repeat the process with clean rags until you have removed all signs of unwanted graffiti from your wood surfaces.

Using Mineral Spirits
This product will thin out oil-based paint and make it easy to remove. To thin oil-based spray paint, pour some mineral spirits into a container.
Drip some paint thinner onto the surface that needs to be de-painted. Use a paintbrush to spread the thinner evenly over the surface.
Wipe the top layer of paint off of the surface with a dry rag or brush. If there are still traces of paint on your wood, use another clean rag and wipe them away. Clean up any remaining mineral spirits with soap and water.
Use Lacquer Thinner
This product gets the job done at a terrific rate. Make sure to wear your mask and use ventilation when you’re working with this.
The best thing to do is to apply a generous amount onto all of the finished wood as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
Wait a few minutes for the paint to soften up and then use a scraper to take off all of the excess paint. If any area requires more rubbing, simply go over it again with lacquer thinner and give it another go.
In no time, the entire piece will be free from paint! Finally, wipe off any residue using a damp cloth or rag.
