Spark Electrode Problem
Before calling in a plumber, there are a few things you can try yourself to check if your water heater is working or not.
If you’re having trouble getting your water heater to light its pilot light, first check the following spark electrode for dirt and corrosion since this could be your problem.
Dirt or corrosion on the spark electrode usually interferes with the flow of electricity to the pilot light and can cause it not to ignite.
To solve this problem, use a wire brush to remove any dirt or corrosion from the inside circuit at the top of the water heater tank and try lighting it again.
If this doesn’t work, then it might mean that the spark electrode is defective so you will have to replace it before being able to light your pilot light again.
Failure Of The Pilot
The pilot lights the gas burner for the water heater. If the pilot does not light, the water heater will not heat up.
A carbon deposit may create a restriction making it too difficult for the gas to reach its ignition point. This leaves you with two possible solutions.
The first option is to clear out and remove any deposits from the pilot, ensuring that it can ignite easily and early enough to light your boiler’s gas before it runs out of air.
However, if this method fails, you might have to replace it altogether in order to provide sufficient heat throughout your home during these frigid winter nights.
Cause Of Pressure Switch
When the water pressure within the tank of a water heater reaches a steady stream, the ignition process is signaled to continue by means of a faulty pressure switch that has closed some sort of circuit.
If this is defective and does not work properly, it can cause the ignition process to stall at certain junctures within the said process, preventing the water heater from turning on.
Thermocouple Issue
A thermocouple is an important part of your electric kitchen or gas grill
burner.
If a flame isn’t detected, the ignition process will stall and your burner will not light.
Defective Igniter
Some water heaters use an ignition source to ignite the gas. If the ignition fails, the water will not get hot enough.
To determine if it is simply an issue with the ignition source or your water heater as a whole, first make sure that you check whether or not your water heater is getting power in general because many issues can be caused by a simple power outage that is more serious.
Once you’ve resolved any potential issues with the electricity, now look at the temperature gauge of your water tank (on top) and check if it indicates a less severe problem that can be handled alone by fixing any clogs inside the tank rather than having to replace your entire unit itself which could prove to be costly.
