Faulty Evaporator Fan Motor
The refrigeration system in a refrigerator has one or more fans. They are used to circulate the cold air from the freezer compartment to the fresh food section which really helps to keep things extra cool and fresh.
Some units have an additional fan dedicated to the vegetable box that ensures high-quality veggies and fruits remain extra fresh when stored at negative temperatures.
To see if your evaporator fan motor is faulty, simply try turning it by hand. If it does not turn, there may be something wrong with it. Try replacing it with a new evaporator fan motor.
Dirty Condenser Coils
Many refrigerators have a condenser coil in the freezer compartment. These coils dissipate the heat from the refrigerator.
If the coils are not clean, that could cause your fridge to work harder to cool down. For example, if you plug an air filter into an air conditioner, it works harder and gets hotter trying to clean the air.
Defective Condenser Fan Motor
The condenser fan motor draws air through the condenser coils over the compressor and into the evaporator coils.
If the condenser fan motor is not working properly, then your refrigerator may not be able to cool properly.
To determine if the fan motor is broken, check first for obstructions on its blades. Next, try turning it by hand.
If the blade doesn’t spin freely, then you know it will need to be replaced as soon as possible due to being defective.
So that you can get your home back to cooling at optimal levels! If there are no obstructions and you find that a turn of the blade doesn’t cause friction.
Use a multimeter (or continuity tester) to test whether or not it has continuity like it’s supposed to – and if this checks out okay then your condenser fan motor is in good shape.
The starts capacitor is not working
When starting up a compressor, it is often required to start with a little bit of electricity. To do this, some compressors start using the power of the start capacitor to produce additional power which would be enough to start and continue running.
If the start capacitor is broken, then the compressor may not start. Without a normal functioning compressor, the refrigerator won’t be able to keep its proper temperature.
To find out if the starter is faulty, you can simply test it for continuity with a multimeter. If any test leads show that it does not have continuity, you’ll know that your starter is bad and needs to be replaced.
The start relay does not have continuity
The start relay and run windings work in tandem with the refrigeration control circuit and other relays to start up the cabinet, motor assembly, and compressor.
If either of these is bad and you don’t replace them quickly enough, you’ll have a fridge that doesn’t get as cold or doesn’t have multiple magnets within your fridge that isn’t able to rotate at all or runs but won’t stay cool enough.
Replace them pronto by using a drill with a screwdriver tip on the end to open up their casing. Once you’ve found the faulty part, take it out and dispose of it immediately. And make sure you remove everything safely.
The compressor is faulty
A refrigerator needs a pump to force the refrigerant through cooling coils during heating and cooling cycles. The compressor is essentially a motor that compresses the refrigerant, thus increasing its pressure.
This pumps it through the condenser during a cooling cycle, or to the evaporator during the heating cycle. If your refrigerator isn’t cooling when it should be, check for other common problems that can occur before replacing any components first (ie check if your system has enough refrigerant).
First, you can try to determine whether all components are working properly by using a multimeter to test their electrical pin connections if any pin shows an open circuit, that component probably isn’t working and should be replaced by a licensed technician. If everything checks out OK, replace the compressor.
Problem with Temperature Control Board
The temperature control board provides voltage to the compressor and fan motors. If a defective temperature control board is not replaced.
It will continue to send voltage at incorrect levels (or stop sending voltage altogether) to components that need it in order to function properly.
However, this is a rare occurrence, and replacing the temperature control board should be considered only after misdiagnosing all other, more commonly defective components in your cooling system.
The thermistor does not work
When the thermistor was invented, it was a great addition to refrigerators and freezers alike. It detects whether or not there is the temperature inside the appliance has reached a certain level.
If a thermistor isn’t working properly, when heat is trying to be transferred out of the appliance, none will occur. The control board and fan will cease to function as they are programmed to do, and so the appliance won’t get cold enough.
You must then test how well the thermistor is working by using a multimeter on it. If the thermistor doesn’t have continuity then you must most likely buy a new one for your refrigerator in order for it to start cooling again.
