Dryer tumbler making noise

Dryer tumbler making noise. A dryer is a utility most people use every single day. Unfortunately, this means that your unit can become damaged or develop problems rather quickly if it’s not cared for properly.

However, with the right repair guide, most issues with your dryer are very easy to diagnose and fix on your own. Everyone with a dryer should really have one of these nearby in case you run into some trouble.

Fortunately, in most cases when your dryer isn’t functioning properly, all you feel will need to be done is have the appropriate part replaced.

Rumbling sounds can occur when the dryer support wheels wear out of shape due to the drum rotating.

These wheels are on either side of a tumble dryer door or at the back. Due to their weight, these wheels can wear down over time.

If you notice that your machine is making a rumbling noise while operating, then check to see if you can feel any bumps in either one of these areas.

While you’re there, feel for ragged edges as well because it may be possible that your support wheel has worn down past its edge.

To help you diagnose the source of your issue, we’ve listed some of the most common reasons why your tumble dryer might be making very loud noises.

A rear drum bearing is catchinga rear drum bearing is catching

The rear bearing holds the drum. Such a part can be either made of ball bearings or brass teardrop-shaped bearings, enabling the drum to turn freely and noiselessly.

If you can hear a squeaking sound or a metallic scraping noise coming from that area, we recommend you take a look at this part and see if it is in bad condition. If yes, then replace it with another one of better quality.

A drain pump is blocked

Condenser dryers collect water in a drainage system and pump it out, but the pumps tend to make noise. You may notice a whirring or squealing noise during drainage.a drain pump is blocked

To check, open the machine and locate the pump, which will be at the bottom of the appliance near the back wall. If it’s faulty, it will need to be replaced. We can send someone out to replace your drain pump if required.

Defective fan motor

The fan motor allows air to circulate throughout the drum and also prevents the laundry from becoming stuck on one side.

This is because when it stops working, the laundry starts moving towards one side of the drum, making it hard for you to remove your clothes after they are dry.

You can recognize whether or not this is happening to one of these motors when you hear a humming sound, even if the drum is not rotating.

If this is, in fact, happening, try disconnecting the wire that comes from this motor in order to see if it makes a difference. If you’re convinced that this motor needs replacing, then simply replace it with a new one.

A drive belt is brokena drive belt is broken

The drive belt connects the motor to the drum, thus enabling the drum to turn. However, over time, it can start to wear out and fray at the edges or end up with a flat spot.

If you hear a regular, consistent banging sound every time the drum makes a rotation, then it’s most likely that this is due to drive belt issues.

To verify whether this is indeed the case, you need only remove the top panel of your appliance and inspect the current condition of its drive belt.

Drum Support Rollers and Shaft

There are two types of dryers, gas and electric. A good number of electric units have a heating element in the unit itself, while the gas units have a burner outside in a separate chamber or compartment.

Gas units often have rollers that support the drum just like with an electric unit – typically located on the rear bulkhead and sometimes on the front bulkhead.

The rollers tend to wear out from usage, causing the dryer’s drum to not rotate freely and create a squealing or thumping noise.

In some cases, when both of these happen separately, it can be difficult for you to figure out which one of these things is causing your problem.

We recommend replacing these rollers as a set since they wear out evenly and at around the same time, and this way, you can get rid of your problem once and for all.

Idler Pulley: Squeaking Noise

The idler pulley, or dryer pulley, prevents the drive belt from slipping when there’s a heavy load in the dryer if the belt starts slipping.

This means it should be replaced, although you may want to replace it before that because if the belt continues to wear out, then it will be necessary to ensure that your clothes or dishes are evenly dried.

The blower wheel

The blower wheel pulls air through the dryer and pushes it out through the vent. Lint, socks, and other small items can escape from the lint filter and get caught in the blower wheel, causing it to overheat or wear out prematurely.

The blower wheel can be replaced if an object becomes trapped in it or if it wobbles as it turns by first removing the wires from the old one and then installing a new one with a device to retain small objects.

It’s important to clean your clothes dryer from time to time to make sure there are no obstructions in there as well as check on its wheels to see if they need replacing periodically.

Maintenance Kit

When your dryer is making noise and you are not sure which part to replace, you can purchase a Dryer Maintenance Kit.

There are several common parts that are defective when a dryer is noisy, which are included in the Dryer Maintenance Kit. Find the maintenance kit most appropriate for your dryer by searching for its model number.

Grinding noises from drum glides

If the drum slides support show any signs of having been used, you should replace them with new ones. This is an easy repair job that can be done in a few minutes, and it prevents the dryer from getting louder after each cycle.

Different models may use screws or rivets to secure these supports to the cabinet; however, almost all of them can be replaced within 15 minutes tops.
